Timeline (variable depending on universe, more variable than Astral's):

Born (usually in either Oklahoma or Florida, but his place of birth is variable depending on the universe) as the second child (although sometimes he is an only child) to two parents. Mac's parents were Christian, although not unusually religious for their community. Still, he represses his sexuality but is not successful in hiding his identity, and most people suspect/know he's gay.

In a lot of universes Mac either grew up on a farm belonging to his parents, or often visited family who do own a farm, so he has farming experience mostly related to caring for/slaughtering animals.

His older brother Boone is much better liked, and although Boone is also gay, he's better at masking it, and eventually marries a woman name Nellie on whom he serially cheats.

As a teenager/young adult Mac emulates the men in his life who he believes he should be like. He believes that if he were like them, life would be easier. He is simultaneously rebellious, and also a doormat to his mother and father (a pattern that continues long into adulthood), as he is both desperate to please others, and unable to keep up the facade of being a heterosexual boy. He craves approval and love, and thinks that he is not worthy of love.

He grows up trying to convince himself of who he is (not just in regards to his sexuality), but underneath the surface Mac is insecure and he wants to catch up on being the kid he didn't get to be.

Although his parents know that he's gay, and have caught him with boys as a teenager, they never mention it.Neither does Mac. It's not something that his family talks about.

Mac develops an opiate addiction in early adulthood/late adolescence. He resolves to quit many times, but never lasts. Depending on his financial situation, he may occasionally have to go periods without drugs, including (in some universes) several years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

In some universes he runs away from home as a teenager, while in others he goes to prison as a young adult after killing a friend he'd had romantic feelings for after a fight concerning his/their sexuality. Because they worked a dangerous job, and the murder (but not the fight that precipitates it) happens during work, Mac is able to convince others that it was an accident, so he isn't charged with murder.

In some universes (TF2 AU being one) it's more clear cut murder, but he's able to escape arrest.

Mac is romantic and very loyal. He's also housebroken and good with children and other animals.

In many universes he meets Georgie through Astral and/or Teresa. In some universes they grow up in the same town. It's pretty variable. He always falls in love with Georgie quickly and wants to be the sort of man she'd like (sometimes to his detriment).

In universes where magic is real, his usual magical power is amplifying the power of others. He doesn't have the ability to do magic on his own, although he can assist during magical rituals.

Mac is autistic, and it adds to his feelings of not belonging. Astral and Georgie can recognize this part of him, but it takes him longer to see it since he was not diagnosed as a child.

He desires making up for his lost childhood/teenage years, but he also craves approval from other people, especially those that he sees as an authority (Astral). He falls in love with Astral as soon as Astral shows him a scrap of acceptance and guidance, Mac eats it up. He enters into a bdsm dynamic with Astral in which Astral is an authority figure, and Mac is a puppy, which helps Mac with his anxiety, which he didn't register as anxiety for most of his life, but which Astral immediately recognized and capitalized on to build their relationship.
