Dissecting Twitter

Tl;dr Thoughts, Future Thoughts

Twitter's Anatomy

  • Character limits necessarily limit what can be communicated
  • The social stigma against making threads (particularly in reply to another person's tweet) de-incentivises in-depth discussion
  • The unfriendly user experience of making a thread (trying to write it as you go, or by using an outside tool or pre-written content) that often results in having to comb through a tweet looking for anything that could be abbreviated or taken out or shortened somehow to get a coherent chunk of thought into the shape of a tweet (often the lopped off words leave the tweet simplistic and incomplete).
  • The fact that you can't save tweet threads as drafts (on desktop, anyway)
  • An algorithm that has learned that outrage and emotional upset are what keep users engaged the longest
  • The trending section where at one point you would mostly see lighthearted hashtags, but that is now algorithmically tailored the specific experience of being a trans person, tailored to their specific pain, where words like "TERF", "Transphobia", "Groomer", and "Autogynephile" fill the trending section, always there in case you want to click and see what people are saying (they're always saying awful things, because it's Twitter we're talking about)
  • Unlike other social media sites, because of the short length of posts, it makes searching through thousands of tweets much easier, meaning more information can be consumed, but the quality of that information is often low.
  • The tiny character limit means that many people will just post a screenshot of an article headline, priming people to accept unsubstantiated claims as true, because necessity dictates that the information be presented in an inherently untrustworthy way (and indirectly).
